Solution: Try running 1-2 print head cleanings. This is a command you can send to your printer which directs it to clean itself up. Below are general instructions for how to perform a print head cleaning, however this is done in di erent ways on every printer, so consult your manual for exact steps.

1. On the computer, click Start, then click on Settings/Control Panel.

2. Select Printers and Faxes (On Windows Vista, select Printer under Hardware and Sound)

3. Right-click on your printer, and click on Properties. 4. Select the Maintenance / Service tab, then select Print Head Cleaning.

On Printer:

Click on Ink/Menu-> tools/cleaning.

If you just installed a new or refilled cartridge you can try the following:

There is a small oating device inside the cartridge used to determine ink level. Sometimes during transportation or re ll, the oater can become stuck. To remedy this, hold the cartridge over a sink or trash can and gently tap the cartridge over a sink or trash can and gently tap the side of the cartridge several times against the side of the sink or trash bin. This should free the oater and return the ink level to its proper point.

Install your cartridges in their proper positions and close the cover. Your printer then runs an initial “head cleaning” and will go online. The printer’s display screen prompts you to verify that a new ink cartridge was inserted for each cartridge you’ve just re lled.

DID YOU CHANGE BLACK? 1. YES 2. NO

If the ink cartridge you installed is new or re lled, please select “1. YES”. This will reset the ink level indicator for the cartridge so your printer will know it is once again full of ink.

If you have received this error message it is most probably that the print head is brunt out, but this is not always the case. Do a search under www.google.ca for “Brother Error 41 21” and to look under the groups tab. There is a lot of discussion regarding this issue there. You can also try unplugging the machine send, then something to print and plug the machine back in. It may now work fine.

Why does my machine’s LCD show “NO CARTRIDGE” even though I have already installed all the ink cartridges? An ink cartridge is not installed properly. Check that the ink cartridges are installed properly and reinstall the ink cartridge following the procedures below:

1 Open the ink cartridge cover door.

2 Push the 4 colored levers down to release all four ink cartridges from the machine.

3 Each color has its own correct position to match the color of the cartridges with the color of the levers. Insert all of the ink cartridges in the direction of the arrow on the label until it clicks into place.

4 Close the ink cartridge cover.

If you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD may ask you to verify that it was a brand new one. ⁃ For example, Did You Change Black? ⁃

– For each new cartridge you installed, select Yes. ⁃

– If the ink cartridge you installed is not a brand new one or newly refilled, be sure to select No. If you mix the colors by installing an ink cartridge in the wrong position, clean the print head several times after correcting the cartridge installation. Once you open an ink cartridge, install it in the machine and use it up within six months of installation.

If the problem continues after verifying the cartridges are installed correctly then there may be a problem with the unit.
