Cartridge Care 101

The Basics

Caring for your cartridge will save you money!

Can Ink-Jet cartridges be refilled many times?
Yes, however you must follow these instructions!

What do I have to do?
Stop printing before your cartridge runs dry, it’s the same as a car running out of oil. You can burn it out.

What next?
Place your cartridge in a plastic bag with a small piece of damp paper towel and bring it in to the Printer Refillers, ASAP.

How to take care of your inkjet cartridges

What To Do:
• Print something once a week or once every two weeks to prevent your ink from drying out.
Ink is designed to dry fast, so don’t let it sit still in the print-head for too long!

• Place your cartridge in a zip-top baggie with a small piece of moist (but not too wet) paper towel for transport or storage.
Just make sure that the paper towel does not touch the print-head: this can cause cross-contamination between colours and ruin your cartridge.

• Read the instructions attached to your refill.
These provide more detailed instructions on how to care for your specific style of cartridge, as well as some general trouble-shooting tips.

• If you aren’t going to use your cartridge for more than a few weeks, attach a clip.
This seals the print-head, and can keep the cartridge from drying out for months. Most Printer Refillers locations sells clips for just 99¢.

• Be careful when installing your cartridge.
Some cartridges have very sensitive components (such as protruding air vents), which can get damaged pretty easily. Make sure you’re putting the cartridge in its proper place and proper orientation.

What Not To Do:
• Be careful to not damage the copper contacts or electronic chips on the side of your cartridge.
Static electricity and power-surges can wreck the contacts. Do not wrap your cartridges in tin foil.

• Do not put your cartridge in the fridge or freezer, and avoid leaving them in your vehicle on very hot or cold days.
High heat can cause leaking or warp plastics, and extreme cold can rupture ink tanks.

• Do not put tape over the print-head.
This does not seal it completely, and can actually cause colours to cross-contaminate which will ruin your cartridge.

• Never let your cartridge run completely dry or empty. As soon as the printing quality starts to deteriorate, stop printing, as attempting to print without ink will damage the print-head.
Think of a car’s engine: driving without oil will severely damage the engine, and the same applies to a cartridge without ink.

• Do not let your empty cartridges sit without ink for too long.
Don’t wait to bring them in for a refill! The sooner you bring them in to Island Ink-Jet, the greater our technicians’ chances of refilling them successfully.
